Pupil mobility and value change

2023 - 2024

Fondazione Intercultura, in collaboration with Royal Holloway University of London and Sapienza University of Rome, is running a study to explore the effects of an international pupil mobility experience on the values of participating pupils.

The research questions are:

  • What values do pupils have before going abroad?
  • What values do pupils have after the experience abroad?
  • Is the experience abroad accompanied by changes in pupils' values?
  • Are there reasons/variables in the programme (or in the pupils' background) that can explain the change occurred (or no-change)?

In order to answer these questions, a longitudinal statistical research is being carried out involving several hundred Italian students abroad and international pupils hosted in Italy on a three-month or year program.
Data is collected before, during, and after the experience abroad using a well-known validated questionnaire based on Schwartz's value theory.

The study is being conducted by Roberto Ruffino and Mattia Baiutti (Fondazione Intercultura), Anat Bardi (Royal Holloway, University of London), and Michele Vecchione (Sapienza University of Rome).

This is an ongoing research.
